This last weekend I bought this laptop for my wife to replace an aging Toshiba Satellite she’s had for a number of years. I’m a computer tech so my poor wife has to suffer through upgrades every few years!
The first thing I did is remove the proprietary choice of anti virus and put on my preference, Avast. Also, I turned off some of the functions that run on the right task bar, that are active. Now the laptop runs faster.
This Acer is pretty light, and looks very modern. The one thing I noticed is that, in order to get the 15.6″ screen, and the wide ratio, Acer cut the height of the screen by 1.” This may not seem like much but compared to the Toshiba it’s replacing you lose a lot of website viewing.
Another tradeoff I didn’t take into consideration when buying this for her is the USB ports. They’re all on the left side of the computer, and there’s only 3. You would think a larger laptop like this would have at least one USB on the back, but the back is bare of any kind of accessories at all. Also, because this system has the 10 key on the right side, you’re pushed far left to type on the keyboard. Kind of makes you feel off-center. Another strange decision that Acer made–it put in a ridiculously small 3 cell battery. I don’t expect the laptop to run more than an hour and a half. I find this decision odd because on their small Acer Aspire One’s which we own two, the batteries are 6 cell and give those netbooks up to five hours of surfing time. Then to put a 3 cell minimal battery on a more expensive computer?–!
You might find it strange that after all these complaints I find the laptop to be desirable. It’s light, the screen is bright, and the keys feel solid. The performance, after some tweaking, is acceptable. The processor is a dual core AMD chip, and it moves along pretty good. If we keep this one I will probably upgrade the memory to 4GB, as it’s only 2GB. Nowadays, 4GB seems to be the new standard.
Myself, I’m not sure about the laptop, my wife has owned Toshiba’s for years and this is a step of faith. Acer is now the number 2 laptop company behind HP, but Toshiba targets a niche market that’s willing to pay a bit more for the quality. I might end up getting her a new Toshiba anyways.
I’ll update this review after more evaluation and test driving. For now, we’re still in the 30 day sale period and the jury is still out.
